1. John 11:25, 4, and 11 (The Context of the Raising of Lazarus) This series of verses in John chapter 11 focuses on Jesus’ divine power over death and the revelation of His identity as the Son of God.  John 11:4: “When Jesus heard this, he said, ‘This sickness will not end in death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’” Catholic Explanation: The Church teaches that human suffering and physical death are not the end of all things, but rather a means to the glory of God. Lazarus’ death was allowed to happen so that through the miracle of his resurrection, people could see Jesus’ divine power and believe that He was sent by the Father.  John 11:11: “He said these things, and then he said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go there to wake him up.’” Catholic Explanation: Jesus used the term “sleep” to describe physical death. For the Catholic Church, this is the theological basis that for believers, the death of the body is just like a temporary sleep before being resurrected on the last day. Death has lost its terrifying sting because Christ has the power to awaken souls.  John 11:25: "Jesus answered: 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, he will live.'" Catholic Explanation: This is one of the greatest summaries of the Christological faith. Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church (KGK) No. 994, Jesus not only promised a future resurrection, but He Himself is the Resurrection. People who are united with Jesus through baptism and faith have already begun to taste eternal life since they were on earth, and physical death cannot separate them from that divine life.  2. 1 John 5:16 (Mortal Sin)  "If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask God... There is a sin leading to death: I do not say that he should pray about it."  Catholic Explanation: This verse is the main biblical basis for the Catholic Church in distinguishing between two types of sin: Venial Sin and Mortal Sin. Venial Sin: Sins that hurt our relationship with God but do not cut off the flow of His grace in the soul. These sins can be restored through prayer, personal repentance, and the reception of Holy Communion. Mortal Sin: According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 1854-1857, mortal sin is a violation of God's law committed in a serious matter, with full awareness, and knowingly. This sin destroys love in the human heart and cuts off the total relationship with God. If a person dies in grave sin without repentance, he chooses "spiritual death" (hell). The meaning of "I did not say that he should pray" is not to prohibit praying for the person, but to emphasize that for grave sins, prayer alone is not enough; the person concerned must mobilize his own will to repent and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) so that his soul can be revived.  3. Philippians 2:5 (Kenosis and Humility of Christ) "You should in your life together, have thoughts and feelings that are also found in Christ Jesus."  Catholic Explanation: This verse begins the famous Christological Doctrine of Kenosis (Christ's self-emptying). The Catholic Church interprets this verse as a pastoral call to live in community. The "mind and feeling of Christ" (Phronesis) meant radical humility and total obedience. Jesus, who is God, willingly emptied himself and became a servant for the salvation of mankind. Catholics are called to remove selfishness, pride, and personal ambition in church and community life, and replace it with the spirit of service, sacrifice, and compassion as shown by Jesus.  4. 1 Corinthians 2:16 (Having the Mind of Christ)  "Because: 'Who knows the mind of God, so that he can advise Him?' But we have the mind of Christ."  Catholic Explanation: Having the "mind of Christ" is closely related to the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer. By nature, the limited human mind will not be able to delve into the mysteries and unlimited will of God. However, through the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation, the Holy Spirit is poured into our hearts. The Catholic Church teaches that with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the faithful are given the gift to see the world, evaluate situations, and make spiritual decisions according to Christ's point of view. We are enabled to understand the truths of faith (mysteries of salvation) that are absurd to the unbelieving world.
