An enema is a procedure in which a solution is injected into the rectum and sigmoid colon through the anus for the purpose of removing stool. The purpose of an enema is to distend the intestines, stimulate the intestinal mucosa, and promote peristalsis, thereby removing stool and gas and softening the intestines. Enemas include cleansing enemas, retention enemas, stool-inducing enemas, and finger enemas. #1) Purpose and Indications of Enemas ① To expel stool stuck in the intestines due to constipation or fecal impaction ② To clean the intestines for surgery or examinations ③ To prevent contamination from fecal matter during surgery or childbirth ④ To lower body temperature ⑤ To remove solutions administered or injected before diagnostic tests after the test ⑥ To promote regular bowel movements during toilet training.
