This video is a record of my visit to the 43rd Gyeongin Art Exhibition. The Gyeongin Art Exhibition is a regionally based competition with a long tradition, serving as a platform where artists of various ages and backgrounds participate to showcase their unique perspectives and expressions. In particular, this competition is divided into several categories, including two-dimensional art (Korean painting, watercolor, Western painting), three-dimensional art, calligraphy, and literati painting, characterized by the coexistence of traditional art domains and modern expressions. Overall, the exhibition features both highly polished works and pieces that reveal the creative process, demonstrating the diverse spectrum typical of such competitions. This video focuses primarily on two-dimensional works, centered on Korean painting, watercolor, and Western painting. What I noticed while viewing the works was that while there were certainly well-executed pieces, I saw even more "paintings created with great effort." Within the format of a competition, not only the level of perfection but also the process and the attempts are revealed. Therefore, some works may feel somewhat rough, while others demonstrate a level of perfection refined over a long period of time. I believe that facing these differences as they are is another way to appreciate the competition. This exhibition was an opportunity to look at the time and attitude contained within the paintings, rather than simply evaluating them.
