This article will discuss the most high-profile scandal in the automotive industry, which resulted in several dozen fatalities and the bankruptcy of a well-known company. Companies, factory and truck explosions, and, most importantly, Russia. It all started with the explosive used in airbag inflators—in devices from the Japanese company Takata, it ruptured the airbag housing in an accident, and the metal fragments could injure or kill the driver. Never heard of it? Yet, the owners of such at-risk vehicles are still driving among us. Incidentally, the Japanese made a fatal mistake by using ammonium nitrate as an explosive in the inflators. Ammonium nitrate is better known to us as a garden fertilizer and the cause of the explosion in the Beirut port in 2020—these dramatic images made international news at the time. The fact is that over the years, the properties of ammonium nitrate inside a parked car changed, leading to tragic consequences.
