Estrazione del lapislazzuli (il pigmento, dalla pietra alla pittura)
The complete procedure to extract the blue pigment (lazurite) starting from the stone, up to the painting of a Sacred image in the Renaissance style. In this video the iconographer Daniela Natali shows the entire procedure, repeated following the instructions left in 1400 by Cennino Cennini, in his famous "Libro dell'arte" (the book of arts). Lapis lazuli is the most valuable pigment among those geerally used; to obtain the bluest pigment, also called "Fra 'Angelico blue" or "Beato Angelico blue", a particular extraction procedure must be used, which is well explained in the video. Daniela Natali then shows one of the main uses of the pigment: the blue of the robe in Mother of God painting. At the end of the video it will be possible to see an image of the "Madonna", inspired by Sano di Pietro, whose mantle is painted with lapis lazuli, also known as Armenian blue.
