They use a lot of nitrogen to thicken new shoots, leaves, and fruit. About half of the total annual absorption is achieved by the time of pinching, so running out of nitrogen will prevent the harvest of delicious fruit. To prevent nitrogen deficiency, be sure to apply fertilizer sparingly. Potted figs, in particular, require special care, as fertilizer will be washed away with each watering. The best time to cut back on nitrogen is in late autumn, when you want to curb branch growth.
