Tourism is booming in Interlaken – but not all locals are equally happy about it. In particular, the sharp increase in guests from countries like China, India, and Saudi Arabia is causing unease in the village. But tourism experts say: This is just the beginning. Reporter Christof Franzen traveled to Interlaken to ask: "Can a holiday resort have too many guests? Or are they simply the wrong ones?" Interlaken used to be dominated by English or German visitors. For years, however, the locals have been focusing on the Asian and Arab markets. "But with the money come guests who seem foreign," complain locals. What bothers some in the village are the veiled women and rental car drivers who don't know the traffic rules, or the fact that traditional hotels and shops are now regularly being sold to foreigners. This obviously brings with it vague anxieties. Officials understand that a certain "density stress" arises, especially during peak times when Interlaken as a destination is firmly in foreign hands. But they also point out that the potential is far from being exhausted. "We're only at the very beginning of development," says one restaurant owner.
