2019 Yamaha YZF-R3 First Ride Review | Ultimate Motorcycling

In 2015, Yamaha launched its popular entry-level sportbike, the YZF-R3. Powered by a spunky 321cc parallel-twin engine, the R3 has been the first step in Yamaha’s sportbike ladder, ideally suited for beginning and advanced riders alike. For 2019, Yamaha has overhauled the much-loved YZF-R3 with new suspension, ergonomics and aerodynamics, all aimed at enhancing the riding experience across the board. Viewers will be keen to notice the new, non-adjustable KYB inverted fork, featuring a claimed 20-percent increase in spring stiffness. In the rear, the same KYB shock returns with completely revised settings. Together, the new suspension on the YZF-R3’s makes for a sporty, yet compliant set up. Complimenting the sportier theme with the 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3 is the lowered clip-on style handlebars one inch, which now encourages an even more aggressive riding position. Also, the fuel tank height has been reduced by roughly the same distance, allowing the rider to tuck under the windscreen and throw the R3 around with ease. Aesthetic changes are also in play, with a revised front cowl meant to emulate the R3’s big brothers, the YZF-R6 and YZF-R1. The new YZF-R3 shares its chassis, brakes, and engine with the previous generation but the R3 taken a step forward in terms of sportiness, while still considering rider comfort. While a sportier riding position can be utilized, the riding position is still one that accommodates a more upright riding position, letting you stay in the saddle all day, in any environment.
