"JESUS WORD" Acts Chapter 8 | The Miracles of Philip in Samaria | The Story of Simon the Sorcerer | The Holy Spirit Acts Chapter 8 is a very important chapter in the history of the Christian church. In this chapter, we can see how the persecution that came to the church and how the word of God spread despite the dispersion of the believers can be seen in a wonderful way. After the death of Stephen, a great persecution began in Jerusalem. But that persecution did not stop the work of God. Moreover, it took the gospel to new areas. This chapter tells us who God uses, how miracles are performed by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Beginning of Persecution of the Church After Stephen was stoned to death, severe persecution began against the church in Jerusalem. The believers scattered for their lives throughout Judea and Samaria. The apostles remained in Jerusalem. A great spiritual truth is seen here. Even when people try to stop God’s work, God uses the same situation for His glory. A young man named Saul began to destroy the church. He would go from house to house arresting believers and throwing them in prison. He was furious that he wanted to destroy Christians. But God would later change Saul into the apostle Paul. This shows how great God’s grace is. The scattered believers preach the gospel The believers did not run away in fear. Wherever they went, they proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ. A true believer cannot stop telling the things of God, no matter what the circumstances. When God’s love is in our hearts, it cannot go unnoticed by others. There is a great lesson here. Sometimes we have difficulties in our lives. Job problems, family problems, health problems may come. But God can use them for His glory. The gospel spread even further because of persecution. Philip’s Ministry in Samaria Philip went to the city of Samaria and preached Christ. There was hatred between the Jews and the Samaritans. Yet God’s love knows no bounds. Jesus is the Savior of all. When Philip preached, the people listened attentively to his words. Because they saw the signs he performed. Evil spirits left the people. The lame and the paralyzed were healed. The whole city was filled with joy. Here the power of the Holy Spirit is seen in glory. The Word of God is not just words. It is power. There is deliverance in the name of Jesus. There is healing. There is joy. The story of Simon the Sorcerer A sorcerer named Simon was deceiving the people of Samaria. He amazed the people by claiming to be great. The people considered him “the great power of God.” But when Philip preached the gospel of Jesus Christ, the people saw the true power of God. Simon was also baptized. However, his heart was not completely changed. When Peter and John came and laid their hands on the believers, they received the Holy Spirit. Seeing this, Simon wanted to buy that power with money. That's when Peter warned him strongly. God's gifts cannot be bought with money. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. It must be sought with a pure heart. There should be no selfishness in serving God. This incident is also a warning to Christians today. God's service should not be used for name, money, or greatness. The importance of the Holy Spirit The service of the Holy Spirit is very clear in this chapter. Without the Holy Spirit, Christian life is weak. The Holy Spirit gives us courage. He gives us the wisdom to understand God's will. When Peter and John laid their hands on the believers, they received the Holy Spirit. This also shows the unity of the church. The apostles confirmed that the Samaritans had also become part of God's family. Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch This is one of the most amazing events in this chapter. God sent Philip to save a man. An angel told Philip to “go to the desert road to Gaza.” Philip obeyed. There, the Ethiopian eunuch was reading the book of Isaiah in his chariot. He was eager to learn about God. But he needed a guide who would help him understand. The Holy Spirit led Philip to him. Philip asked: “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” This is still true today. Many people read the Bible. But they need proper instruction. God uses his servants to help them understand his Word. Isaiah’s Prophecy and Jesus The passage the eunuch was reading is Isaiah chapter 53. It tells of a suffering servant. Philip used that scripture to preach about Jesus Christ. Jesus was sacrificed like a lamb for our sins. He suffered silently. He gave his life for our salvation. This is the central message of the gospel — Jesus died for us, rose again, and offered salvation. The Importance of Baptism As they were traveling, they found water. Immediately the eunuch asked, “What prevents me from being baptized?” This is a sign of true faith. A person who believes in Jesus must offer his life to God. Baptism is an outward testimony. It shows that he has died to the ol...
