We Bought an Abandoned House for $1,000. CLEARING the territory & DIY RENOVATION | EP26

The autumn nights are closing in fast on our abandoned $1,000 countryside homestead. In Episode 26, we work against the clock to prepare our home for the winter cold, balancing structural engineering with internal finishes. We start in the dark, loading up our trailer with crushed stone under a flashlight to secure our concrete supplies. After a peaceful night timelapse over the village, we kick off the morning by installing our newly restored hallway door to seal out the autumn chill. Next, we complete a major milestone in the bathroom: installing a massive, wild willow slab countertop that we crafted ourselves from a fallen tree on our land. Since it's a raw, single-slab piece with no gluing, we show how we stabilized the natural wood cracks using epoxy resin and custom wooden butterfly keys. We also share our wood stabilization secrets: making stress-relief cuts on the underside and mounting a metal C-channel with slotted holes to let the wood expand and contract without warping. The restoration continues indoors as we mix a fresh batch of our homemade eco-spackle (casein, white clay, and lime) and run an experiment by applying it over a modern gypsum base in the kitchen. To recharge our energy, we share a quiet evening practice of sunset gazing by the local pond—an ancient method to restore failing eyesight. Finally, we clear massive tree stumps with a roaring bonfire, reinforce our underground water caisson with vertical supports for next week's big concrete pour, and hang fiberglass on our bedroom ceiling.
