Behringer ECM8000 vs DBX RTA-M | Smaart Phase Test – The Truth About Phase Measurements

Have you ever spent hours trying to fix a speaker phase problem that didn’t actually exist? In this video, I share my real-world experience using the Behringer ECM8000 measurement microphone with Smaart software. Based on the measurements, it appeared that nearly all of my loudspeakers were out of phase. I spent countless hours checking speaker wiring, DSP settings, polarity, and system alignment because I genuinely believed there was a serious problem with my PA system. After extensive troubleshooting, I decided to repeat the exact same measurements using a DBX RTA-M measurement microphone. The results were completely different. The phase response immediately became consistent, and my loudspeaker system measured exactly as expected. This led me to realize that the issue was not my speakers, but the measurements I was getting from the ECM8000 microphone in my particular testing setup. This video is not intended to criticize Behringer or claim that the ECM8000 is a bad microphone. It simply documents my own testing and personal experience. Every measurement microphone can behave differently depending on manufacturing tolerances, calibration, and the application. My goal is to share what I discovered and hopefully save other sound engineers and system technicians from spending hours chasing a problem that may not actually exist. If you use Smaart, perform loudspeaker alignment, or work with professional PA systems, I hope this comparison helps you.
