Day 4/13 Annan to Castle Douglas 4K
We set out on a 13 day, 600 mile cycle adventure in late September 2022. Our route started on the east coast or Northumberland at Cambois, where we travelled along national cycle routes 10 & 72 to Hexham on the first day. Subsequent days took us further west to Carlisle and then into Scotland, still traveling west along the Solway coastline. Then turning towards Ayr via the long slow climbs of Galloway and Maybole before arriving in Ayr. Heading inland towards Glasgow, the Kelpies and Edinburgh. Striking south from Edinburgh to Innerleithen and back to the English border town of Norham. Then onto our final stages of Seahouses on the Northumbrian east coast and Cambois. Day 4 of 13, Cycling from Annan, initially along National Cycle Route (NCN) 7, then turning onto the quiet country lanes that hug the edge of the Solway estury. Our first stop was the fascinating area around Ruthwell , which is the home of the first official savings bank and one of our most significant Saxon artefacts, the Ruthwell Cross. We had intended to visit Caerlaverock Castle, sadly this was closed for restoration work. After lunch near Townfoot we arrived at Dumfries. Leaving the Solway behind, we started to encounter gradual inclines, which the became rolling hills along winding roads and quiet countryside, until we reached our final destination, Castle Douglas.
