"It was a great honor to serve the Ukrainian people as Defense Minister," wrote incumbent Mykhailo Fedorov on Telegram. He also posted photos on X, in which he is seen with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Fedorov has been serving only in a caretaker capacity since Tuesday. The resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, accepted by parliament, led to the dismissal of the entire cabinet. Before publishing his post, Fedorov had a conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the constitution, the president has the right to nominate the head of the defense ministry. Media reports indicate that Zelenskyy intends to propose the current Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, for the position. Serhiy Koretskyi, the current head of the state-owned energy company Naftogaz, is being considered for the position of prime minister. Conflict with Army Chief Syrskyi? Reports suggest that the change in the ministry is due to a conflict between Fedorov and Army Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Furthermore, the minister has reportedly been unable to resolve the problems surrounding the forced mobilization of conscripts. Just under a week ago, around 200 people attacked a recruitment team in Lviv, western Ukraine, and vandalized their official vehicle. In 2019, Fedorov led Zelenskyy's media campaign during his election campaign and subsequently took over the newly created Ministry of Digital Affairs. The 35-year-old was long considered a favorite of Zelenskyy. Recently, however, he has also been rumored to harbor his own political ambitions, including for the presidency.
