Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, performed by Oxford Theatre Guild, December 2013
Bored with study, Doctor Faustus looks for a short cut to infinite knowledge in his magic books -- and raises Satan's little helper, Mephistopheles, who joins the renegade scholar as they rampage across Europe. Faustus squanders the Devil's promised prize of knowing it all in his pursuit of shallow and hedonistic pleasures; after all, the payment demand for his immortal soul seems so insignificant. In a world where the internet grants us boundless knowledge and we fill precious time with cat antics, pornography and celebrity tittle-tattle, Faustus, a mischievous, party loving hell raiser, knows he should find salvation, but doesn't time fly when you're having fun? OTG's devilish production of Marlowe's classic play sets the timeless story of wasted opportunities against a background of 24 hour TV, confessional chat shows and cheap thrills. And in the wings, something shadowy is waiting for us with infinite patience, ready to collect... The A Text, with minor revisions, some lines re-apportioned. Performed between December 17 and 21st 2013, staged at the Old Fire Station in Oxford.
