The tote bag is one of those items that always come in handy at home. It’s perfect for grocery shopping, carrying products from the market, transporting various purchases, or simply for everyday use around the house. Many people are used to buying such bags, but in reality, they’re quite easy to sew yourself. Like any other bag, a tote can come in different styles and designs. Today, I want to show you one of the simplest and most practical versions that I made specifically for shopping trips. For this project, I used a rectangular piece of fabric measuring 48 by 86 cm. First, I folded it in half along the 48 cm side, then folded it once more along the length. Next, on the fold line, I marked 13 cm down and 5 cm to the left. Using these marks, I rounded off the corner and cut away the excess fabric. This shapes the top of the bag and creates space for the handles. Then, I finished the raw edges with bias tape. After finishing the edges, I unfolded the fabric with the right side facing out and stitched the side seams. I sewed about 0.4 cm from the edge. Then, I turned the bag inside out and stitched the side seams again. This method completely hides the raw edges inside the seam. To give the bag more volume and make it more practical, I formed 5 by 5 cm corner gussets. Next, I worked on the top part of the bag. I folded the edge over and stitched it down. The casing width was 3 cm, which matched the width of the handle I had prepared. I used a strip of fabric 96 cm long. I threaded it through both casings along the top edge of the bag, then joined the ends and stitched them together to form a loop. After that, I gently distributed the gathers along the top of the bag. The handle slightly cinched the fabric, and the bag immediately took on a more interesting and stylish look. I like this design because it combines ease of making with practicality. It takes very little time to sew, and the result is excellent. This bag folds easily, takes up minimal space in your purse or car, and is always ready to hand when you need it.
