First ScotRail Caledonian Sleeper | ECML Diversion to London!

PLEASE READ: Due to the Watford Upgrade taking place every weekend during August 2014, the WCML was closed between Hemel Hempstead and London Euston. Therefore on Friday & Sunday nights the Caledonian Sleeper services were diverted down the ECML. I was on board the 20:44 from Inverness, however I didn't film much of the highland mainline as I've made loads of videos of that route and I wanted to focus my video on the diversion down the ECML. After making our way all the way down the ECML and seeing a stunning sunrise after Doncaster, just before reaching Kings Cross we cut off and join the north London line briefly pass Camden Road before leaving it again and branching off towards the WCML. The only way into Euston is to reverse. So we head off towards Wembley where a class 67 takes charge once again and relieves the 90 to drag us back into Euston station. After a long journey from the highlands we arrive on platform 2 at Euston alongside the other lowland sleeper from Glasgow & Edinburgh in platform 1. During the WCML closure the only services from Euston were 3x hourly London Overground to Watford and an hourly Virgin service via the Chiltern Mainline to Coventry. Many people ask why does it not just go to/from Kings Cross if its diverted down the ECML? The reason being that the Sleeper is the longest passenger train in Europe, with 16 coaches (a mix of mk2 & mk3's) and a loco Kings Cross has no platform big enough to accommodate such a train. So there you go! That was my sleeper ECML diversion experience. Moments of interest: 8:00 - Arrival at Edinburgh and lots of shunting movements and loco swap. 17:22 - Departure from Edinburgh down the ECML *Note the light left on facing the coach. 20:50 - Newcastle 30:00 - Passing through York non-stop 34:00 - Doncaster and driver swap 38:00 - Sun starting to rise and daylight noticeable 45:49 - Passing Peterborough 46:50 - Beautiful sunrise shots after Peterborough 56:23 - Leaving the ECML 59:33 - Camden Road station 01:02:17 - Joining the WCML and entering Primrose Hill Tunnel 01:08:50 - Arriving at Wembley and then back into Euston Thanks for watching!
