The Fisherman Who Didn't Know He Was Helping Millions

In 1986, The Cure released Standing on a Beach, a greatest hits compilation that would become one of the decade's landmark albums. But the cover featured someone no one had ever heard of: a retired fisherman named John Button. He had no connection to the music industry. He had never heard of the band. When asked why he had agreed to be on the album cover, Button gave a simple answer: "If I can help these youngsters break through, after all, why not?" He genuinely believed he was helping young musicians on the edge of success. He had no idea The Cure had already sold millions of records and become one of the most influential bands in the world. The album went on to sell around four million copies worldwide and achieved double platinum certification in the United States. The photograph of John Button's weathered, authentic face became iconic—appearing in music videos, on posters, in the visual identity of one of rock's most important bands. Yet Button himself remained largely unaware of the scale of what he had helped create. He mentioned he might buy a record player out of curiosity, just to hear what these young musicians had made. Button's story is a quiet portrait of generosity. He said yes to help people he didn't know, in an industry he didn't understand, without expecting recognition. His hope to support struggling artists was genuine, even though the artists he was helping had already succeeded beyond measure. — SOURCES & CREDITS — Sources & further reading: · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standin... · http://picturesofyou.us/86/86-jb-rock...
