EUROPE: Demographic crisis looms for Germany – who will pay Germany's pensions in the future? Europe continues to see declining birth rates. The trend is particularly drastic in Spain. Marc Felix Serrao reports that the local school was once built for 700 students. Today, only 31 children attend. Several grades are taught together. According to demographers, no political measure has yet been implemented that can permanently reverse this trend. Programs such as the expansion of childcare places in Germany or financial incentives in Hungary have only temporarily increased the birth rate. Serrao also points to the consequences for social security systems. In Germany, in the 1950s, there were six contributors for every pensioner. Today, there are about two.
