RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 65 (64), 10abcd. 10e-11. 12-13. 14 (R.: cf. Lk 8:8) In good soil, the seed will yield its harvest. You have visited and watered the earth, * you have enriched it abundantly. The stream of God has overflowed with waters, * You have prepared their grain. And so you have tilled the earth: * You have watered its furrows, leveled its furrows, * You have loosened it with showers, * and blessed its harvest. You have crowned the year with your goodness, * wherever you pass, you cause it to flourish. The steppe pastures are full of dew, * and the hills are girded with joy. SECOND READING Rom 8:18-23 We await glory Brothers: I believe that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy of comparison with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation eagerly awaits the revelation of the sons of God. For creation was subjected to futility—not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it—in hope that it too will be liberated from its bondage to decay to share in the freedom and glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only it, but we ourselves also, who already possess the first fruits of the Spirit, groan with our whole being as we wait for adoption as sons—the redemption of our bodies. SINGING BEFORE THE GOSPEL Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia The seed is the word of God, and the sower is Christ; whoever finds Him will live forever. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia GOSPEL Matthew 13:1-23 The Parable of the Sower On that day Jesus went out and sat by the sea. And suddenly such a large crowd gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, while all the people stood on the shore. And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Look, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Others fell on rocky ground, where they had little soil, and immediately they sprang up, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun rose, they were scorched and withered because they had no root. And others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. And others fell on good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. Whoever has an ear, let him hear!" Then His disciples came to Him and asked, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" He answered them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. For whoever has, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Therefore I speak to them in parables: "Looking, they do not see, and hearing, they do not hear, nor do they understand. So the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled in them: 'You will hear, but you will not understand; you will see, but you will not perceive. For this people's heart has become hardened, and their ears have hardened, and they have closed their eyes; so that they will not see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I will heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men have desired to see what you see, and did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. Therefore, listen to the parable of the sower. Whenever the word of the kingdom is heard and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on the path represents such a person. The seed sown on rocky ground represents the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, but it has no root in itself and is unstable. When tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, it immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns represents the one who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
