Playing congas in worship music; Part One.
Playing congas in worship part one is the first episode of a new series where I discuss and teach some ideas on playing congas in worship styles of music. My apologies as usually a percussion tutorial is published every Saturday morning however I was not able to get a video up this week. In this new series I start the discussion on how to implement the role of congas in worship music; especially when it may not exist on the original recordings. One of the difficulties with playing hand drums in these styles of music (think CCM, Hillsong, Elevation, Jesus Culture, etc.) is that drums such as congas, bongos, etc. are rarely used in combination with a drummer. You are essentially working with the music director/team in composing and arranging your parts. If you are new to this I believe the important thing is to continue to develop your skill (timing, tones, learning rhythms) and build your vocabulary. As you are doing this spend time practicing and do not be afraid to experiment and try new things. In the next couple episodes I will list a few of my own resources i.e. percussionists, rhythms, songs, that I draw inspiration from when I am playing this style of music. God bless you.
