It is located right in the middle of the border between Pamarayan Village, Pamarayan District, and Panyabrangan Village, Cikeusal District. There is a story behind the dam's existence when it was still operational in the past. Currently, it has been abandoned due to age. Here's the complete information. Historically, this dam was built over 20 years, beginning in 1905 and completed in 1925. Its construction was considered the strongest at the time, thanks to the extensive use of cement and steel. Measured in width, the Pamarayan Dam is 191.65 m long and consists of a main building, control room, secondary dam, lorry bay, bridge, and lorry tracks. The dam has a total of 10 sluice gates based on steel plates to withstand the flow during use. What's interesting is its medieval European design. The sluice gates are modeled after the temples of Athens, Greece, with a span that divides the river and is flanked by towers. In principle, this dam works by storing water through an opening within a flinking column and an entablature. The roof has an asymmetrical shape with a cross-shaped span and three circular towers. The structure's large and complex construction made it very expensive at the time. Various sources say the project cost 5 million guilders, equivalent to trillions of rupiah, and employed 300,000 workers from West and Central Java. The high cost of the dam necessitated a strict work system. Unruly workers were immediately thrown into prisons within the dam's concrete structure. Besides providing infrastructure, the dam's construction was also intended to calm the anger of farmers in Serang. At the time, many farmers were angry about water shortages caused by Dutch government policies. They launched massive attacks, led by local warriors, as many residents were starving to death. To prevent further unrest, a large dam was built in Pamarayan to supply water to the farmers. The Pamarayan Dam has been inoperable since 1997. The reason for this was the deterioration of the steel and concrete, making it extremely risky to continue filling it with water. In its place, the local government built the New Pamarayan Dam, located approximately 1 kilometer from the old structure. Although called a dam, this new structure is smaller and operates on the principle of a diversion channel across the rivers around the Serang area.
