Craighouse old Lunatic Asylum. Edinburgh

Craighouse was part of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, a psychiatric Hospital in Morningside. It was renamed Thomas Clouston Clinic in 1972, but when I was working there (1975-1981) everybody still called it Craighouse. Closed in early 1990's due to changes in the way mental illness was treated and the increasing emphasis on care in the community. There was a lovely "Grand Hall" in an impressive room with high ceiling, chandeliers, 2 large carved fireplaces and polished floor. Also stags heads on the wall and intricately carved door frames and wall panels. An underground tunnel took you from the main building up to Bevan building.
