Bradford Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of West Yorkshire, and just under 10 miles west of Leeds, is the city of Bradford. Around the time of the Norman Conquest in the 11th century Bradford was a small village of around 300-350 people. By the Middle Ages it had developed into a town centred around Kirkgate, Westgate and Ivegate, whose street names are a throwback to the Danish occupation that predates William the Conqueror. In the 19th century Bradford grew from a small town with a population of just over 6,000 into the richest city in Yorkshire, and allegedly one of the richest cities in the world. This was down to its role in the Industrial Revolution where it became a centre for wool production, earning the nickname 'Woolopolis'. Evidence of Bradford's affluent past can be seen in the Victorian architecture which is plentiful in the city centre. The Wool Exchange Building, seen just after the 4-and-a-half-minute mark, was built from 1864 to 1867. Wool was traded here up until the early 1970s. Today it is a Waterstones. Just over the road, Bradford City Hall was built from 1870 to 1873. This is perhaps the most iconic landmark of the city. Standing on Centenary Square, its design was inspired by the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Both buildings are Grade I listed. In 1897 Bradford was granted a charter giving it city status. Two years later, in 1899, local man William Morrison opened an egg and butter stall in Rawson Market in Bradford. In 1961, William's son, Ken Morrison, opened up the very first Morrisons supermarket in the Girlington district of Bradford. In 2004 Morrisons bought out rival supermarket Safeway on its way to breaking into the "big four" of UK supermarkets. Bradford is represented in football by Bradford City A.F.C. since 1903, and in rugby league by Bradford Bulls (formerly Bradford Northern before the Super League). Famous people from Bradford include author J. B. Priestly, artist David Hockney, TV presenter Richard Whiteley, magician Steven Frayne, a.k.a. Dynamo and Zain Malik off of One Direction (for the youngsters out there). Also, hard rock band The Cult formed in Bradford in the early '80s. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
