Dewey Humboldt & Mayer Arizona
Join me on a tour of two historical gold mining towns located in the high desert of Northern Arizona. Dewey-Humboldt and Mayer Arizona. Dewey-Humboldt has a long and interesting history made up of stories about nomadic tribes, prospectors looking for gold, miners and ranchers. The Dewey area was settled in the summer in 1863 after the discovery of gold on Lynx Creek in the spring. The town of Mayer is located minutes away from Dewey. Mayer was also a mining town. In 1882, Joe Mayer officially founded the town which bears his name today. In about 1882 Mayer was mining in the Tip Top Mine in Central Arizona. During one of his trips to Prescott he made a stop at the Big Bug Stage Station. It was a stage stop on the Black Canyon Stage Line. Mayer was impressed with the area, so he purchased the “Big Bug Stage Station” for $1,200 in gold. Many Miners would often stop at the Mayer's place to rest and to patronize the store which he had built.
