It originated from Ermita, Manila among the Chavacano Manileños. It portrays young ladies holding scented fans or paypay and flirting with young men with canes and straw hats. The accompanied music of this dance is a mixture of a slow habanera and a very fast polka accentuated with heavy stamping of the men’s heel-clicks. Followed by the final dance this evening with Jota Manilena. Jota Manileña is a Filipino adaptation of the Spanish Jota, a genre of folk music and dance from Spain, that is named after the capital city of the Philippines, Manila. This dance was first performed during the celebration of Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898, where military officials and soldiers joined the people in the streets as they danced to brass band and music. The local dancers used elongated bamboo castanets to take the place of the traditional Spanish castanets.
