They stole BMW's best secret and built the most British car in the world. In 1945, a British officer flew to Munich, packed up the drawings and engines of the BMW 328, and took them back to England, right under the noses of the American occupation forces. What emerged was no ordinary car: the Bristol 403, built by bomber engineers to aviation standards, powered by a German engine, refined by the German chief engineer Fritz Fiedler himself, and driven by British gentlemen for whom a Rolls-Royce was simply too conspicuous. Only 281 examples were ever built. And yet, this car changed the history of automotive engineering in a way that can still be felt today when tracing the lineage of the Shelby Cobra.
