POV: Back to 1988 🚗 | A Softer Time, Captured // 80s Synthwave & Vaporwave Nostalgic Mix Roll back the clock and ride shotgun down Las Vegas Boulevard as it looked in 1988. This footage captures the Strip in the final glow of its classic "old Vegas" era , the last breath before the neon desert town reinvented itself into the megaresort capital of the world. Filmed from a car gliding down the Boulevard, the drive passes the great signs and marquees that defined a generation: the towering neon of the Stardust, the elegant sweep of the Sands, the desert glamour of the Dunes and the Desert Inn, the sparkle of the Riviera and the Frontier, alongside survivors like Caesars Palace, the Flamingo, and the Sahara. In 1988 the Strip was still low-rise and intimate, lit almost entirely by hand-built neon and incandescent bulbs rather than the digital screens of today. This was the Vegas of the Rat Pack's afterglow — one final year before Steve Wynn's Mirage opened in 1989 and touched off the boom of themed mega-hotels that would erase much of what you see here. That's what makes these frames so haunting. Within just a few years, most of these landmarks were gone. The Dunes was imploded in 1993 to make way for the Bellagio and its dancing fountains. The Sands fell in 1996, replaced by The Venetian. The Stardust and the Frontier were both demolished in 2007. The Riviera came down in 2016. Where old marquees once buzzed, glass towers, digital billboards, and sprawling resort complexes now rise. Drive the same stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard today and it's almost unrecognizable , brighter, taller, and infinitely bigger, dominated by the Bellagio, The Venetian, Wynn, Aria, The Cosmopolitan, and the glowing sphere on the horizon.
