In the eleventh year of the Hijra, after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Arabian Peninsula was shaken. Many tribes apostatized, others refused to pay zakat (obligatory alms), and some even claimed prophethood. The nascent Islamic state was on the verge of collapse. In this turbulent atmosphere, Malik ibn Nuwayra, leader of the Banu Yarbu' clan of the Tamim tribe, emerged as a courageous knight and charismatic leader. Malik was a powerfully built man, clean-shaven, dressed in a pristine white robe, a luxurious brown cloak embroidered with gold, and a brown turban and veil. He refused to pay zakat, considering it a tax levied on the city, and called upon his people to declare independence from the new caliphate. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq dispatched Khalid ibn al-Walid, the Sword of God, at the head of a strong army to quell the rebellion. Khalid reached the al-Bata'ih region, where Malik resided. The Decisive Confrontation On a cold night, Khalid's army surrounded Malik's camp. Malik and his companions emerged, only to find themselves besieged. Malik looked at Khalid with cunning eyes, trying to use his intelligence to escape. Malik and his companions entered into negotiations, but Khalid was resolute. Malik and a group of his leaders were captured. They were brought to Khalid's tent, where Malik stood bound, but he cunningly tried to feign repentance. In Khalid's tent Abu Qatada entered Khalid's tent angrily and shouted, "How can you kill a Muslim man?!" Then Umar ibn al-Khattab came to Abu Bakr in Medina, furious, complaining about Khalid's actions. But Abu Bakr was wise and said to him, "No, Umar, Khalid is a sword from among the swords of God. I will not dismiss him until I summon him and hear his side." The final confrontation Malik was brought before Khalid in the courtyard. Malik was kneeling, looking at Khalid with cunning eyes. Malik tried to justify his position, but Khalid was resolute. Abu Qatada and others stood up to defend Malik, but in the end, the decision was made to execute Malik and those with him whose apostasy had been proven. Conclusion Khalid returned to Medina, where he was received with wisdom by Abu Bakr and with reproach by Umar. However, the Islamic state emerged stronger after suppressing the Ridda Wars.
