Anaximander is the author of the first known written text in the history of philosophy. Only a single fragment of his work "Peri Physeos" (On Nature) has survived to this day, but even these few sentences contain one of the deepest concepts in the history of human thought: Apeiron. Apeiron, in Greek, means boundless, infinite, indefinite, and indefinable. According to Anaximander, the origin of the universe is neither water, nor fire, nor earth, nor air—a specific substance. The source of the universe is an immutable and infinite principle, possessing no specific attributes: Apeiron. This idea represents the first major leap in the human mind from concrete matter to abstract conception. Anaximander did not content himself with an abstract concept; he also attempted to understand the concrete structure of the universe. He declared that the world was cylindrical, suspended in space, and suggested that the sun and moon appeared through vents in enormous rings of fire. He drew the first known map of the world, argued that life arose in humid environments, and that humans descended from fish-like creatures. He introduced the sundial, the gnomon, to Ionia and led the establishment of the Apollonia colony in Miletus. This versatility made him not only a philosopher but also a scientist, cartographer, and statesman.
