How to choose AV receiver for home cinema?AVR Shopping guide inTamil#MAXHARMONICS#MAXELECTRONICS

AVR should be selected based on your personal preference rather than general shopping. Based on your room size, plan for configuration choice and then AVR should be selected. If your room size is huge it is better to select higher configurations with optimum power to be delivered to speakers by the AVR. Room size can be classified roughly as 100-150 sq feet as small, 150-200 as medium and 250 and above as large sized room. Impedance of the speakers to be matched appropriately by the AVR selected. Ideally most AVR can handle from 8 ohms impedance to 16. If you have lower impedance speakers then make sure the AVR selected can handle such high resistance speakers. Also, if read in AVR manual the power specification column can be like this, as example.. • power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.05% 2ch Drive) 150 W • Power Output (6 ohm, 1 kHz, 0.7% 2ch Drive) 190 W • Power Output (6 ohm, 1 kHz, 10% 1ch Drive) 260 W In this we have to interpret appropriately as how much power your AVR can deliver if all channels are driven in home cinema while watching the movie. There will be sure 30-40% drop in numbers as all channels are operating. Based on above example if you are running all channel (ATMOS or DTS X) then you might get an average of 95-105 watts per channel. So don’t go blindly by the high rated wattage mentioned in the package box or the marketing captions mentioned in the box. Also look at the power delivered for atmos height channels compared to ground channels as the discrepancy can cause trouble while using an Bi-amp option for extra power to fronts. Always select based on the power your speaker and the room require than your personal choice. If you are driving at constantly high speeds of 100Km/hour then your car or vehicle should be having adequate horsepower, torque, strong built, aerodynamic capacity to handle the speeds. Compromising on these factors can be detrimental. Based on placement also we can select AVR with choices of Class AB, D, H. Another important criteria is the multi subwoofer number choices. If your select multi sub options in AVR it is better to possess the sub tuning options as separate. Choose for Separate sub pins with separate controls in AVR menu rather than single output split into 2 pre outs which is commonly used in low end models. There are also mid range processor like Iota AVX 17, Anthem AVM 90 where 4 sub pre outs are there. Mini-DSP could also be tried by its labor-intensive process. If you are comfortable using REW software its no big deal. I personally prefer XTZ room analyzer II Pro which is very user friendly and handy. Also look at personal options of gaming, HDMI switcher quick media switch options etc etc. Importantly look at future expansion options. Latest formats and technologies are introduced for audio and video every year or two. Finally, the brand selection. Various brands are available, we can classify based on manufacturing region based broadly like Japanese brands vs western brands overall. Eastern (Japs) are feature rich and the user interface are little easy to operate. New updates are frequently available and might be cost effective. We can get very basic AVRs also at a very minimum budget also. On other hand western brands are little sophisticated and concentrates on clean power delivery rather than features. For serious audiophiles western brands might be commonly preferred or the high end Japan manufactured models not the routine broad range products. Western brands are little expensive than eastern counterparts and they don’t have basic AVR to play with. So its better to learn driving in small cars before driving full range luxury cars. As we go high end with AVR, all the AVR processor will be sturdy enough and will deliver the power required for your speakers. Infact, most of them sound the same. Before you select one, please demo and find which suits your taste. So research before choosing the right pick for you. Good luck with your purchase… Thanks.
