If it's a croissant, a cup of cappuccino, and orange juice, you're absolutely right. When we see what people eat for breakfast in Italy, it seems that only slender young ladies can get their fill. This is fundamentally at odds with the Russian tradition of having a hearty breakfast to fuel them for the day. Vincenzo explains this by saying that Italians eat a large, late dinner, so they don't get hungry until the morning. The Italian Vincenzo's story also includes a "declaration of love" for Russian kasha, which doesn't even have a suitable Italian word for. Now, after several years living in Russia, Vincenzo can eat kasha for breakfast, but their first encounter wasn't so optimistic. He found it reminiscent of prison food. Besides this initial dislike, Vincenzo recalls Sunday family breakfasts, when his father would make everyone a tortilla—an omelet with croutons. It was the only thing his father knew how to cook. Typically, Italian breakfast dishes are limited to sweet pastries: brioche, cookies, or toast with butter and jam. On weekends, breakfast in Italy is leisurely, always savoring the moment and anticipating the day ahead, reading a book or newspaper, and chatting with family and friends.
