Aristotle on Virtue and Habit
Aristotle tells us that our human function is "activity in accordance with reason" and that this function can only be accomplished if we develop the virtues. What is a virtue? What does it mean to have a virtuous character? How do we become virtuous? This video begins to examine the answer Aristotle gives to these questions in Book II of the Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle argues that we develop virtue through habit, just as we develop athletic or musical skills. His account highlights the importance of thinking intentionally about how our daily actions contribute to our moral habits and character.
