Valencia 4K Walk — From Plaza to Platform: The Walk That Says 'Bon Voyage' Slow TV

It's only three hundred metres. From the steps of the Town Hall to the ticket hall of the North Station. Three hundred metres of Valencia's most concentrated ambition — a grand avenue, two architectural masterpieces, and a station that says goodbye in twenty languages. This is the walk every traveller takes without knowing they're walking through history. THE AVENUE — MARQUÉS DE SOTELO The avenue was born from the same impulse that reshaped the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the early 20th century. The old San Francisco convent was gone. The city needed a grand approach to its new civic heart. Avenida del Marqués de Sotelo — named after the mayor who presided over much of this transformation — became that artery. Wide. Ceremonial. Lined with buildings that announced Valencia's arrival in the modern century. THE BUILDINGS Casa del Chavo (1928) At numbers 8 and 10 — Enrique Viedma Vidal, the same architect who gave the city the Finca Roja. A building for the Instituto Nacional de Previsión. Style: casticismo valenciano — a Spanish regionalist answer to modernism. Warm stone. Ornamented balconies. A tower anchoring the corner. The Marqués de Sotelo himself inaugurated it. They call it «Casa del Chavo» — nobody quite remembers why. A nickname that stuck. A building that once held the nation's social security, now watching tourists pass with suitcases. La Unión y el Fénix (1931–1938) The corner of Calle Játiva and Marqués de Sotelo. Enrique Viedma Vidal again — this time in neo-baroque with a casticista flourish. Built for an insurance company during the chaos of the Spanish Civil War. Nine floors. Two grand façades. And at the top: a phoenix ridden by Ganymede. The mythical bird that rises from its own ashes — the symbol of La Unión y el Fénix Español. Below it: a triumphal arch over the entrance hall. Offices in the mezzanine. Apartments above. Commerce at street level. A temple of insurance. A monument to resurrection — rising while Spain tore itself apart. THE STATION — ESTACIÓN DEL NORTE (1917) Demetrio Ribes. 1906. The Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte commissioned a station. Ribes gave them a Modernista cathedral. The façade: crenellated, castle- like, covered in ceramic tiles. Oranges. Orange blossoms. The fruits of the Huerta rendered in mosaic. This is not a station that forgot where it was built. Inside: a hall of mosaics by José Mongrell. Wooden ticket counters. Wrought-iron lamps. Ceramic panels wishing travellers «Bon voyage» in Valencian, Spanish, French, German, English, Italian, and a dozen more languages. Josefina Momblanch Llopis — sister- in-law of the architect — looks down from a mosaic panel. The station's silent muse. The hall fills with echoes: rolling suitcases, platform announcements, hurried goodbyes, the hum of departure. Trains for Barcelona. For Madrid. For everywhere. Declared a Monument of Cultural Interest in 1987. Still in daily use. Still saying goodbye. THE WALK Three hundred metres. Past the Town Hall — neoclassical, ceremonial. Past Casa del Chavo — casticista, warm. Past the phoenix on its temple — neo-baroque, defiant. Through the station doors. Footsteps fade into the mosaic hall. No narration. No music. Just the sound of a city walking towards its trains. 🎧 Best experienced with headphones 📍 Route: Plaza del Ayuntamiento → Av. del Marqués de Sotelo → Estación del Norte, Valencia 🏛️ Key buildings: • Casa del Chavo (1928) — Av.
