Some weekends I just need to walk, and this time Shinjuku (新宿) felt like the right place to disappear into. I got there as the day was winding down, when the sky over the train tracks goes the color of cold tea and the NTT Docomo tower stands there like it's keeping time for the whole city. I had nowhere to be, and for once I was completely fine with that. So I followed the crowd toward Kabukicho (歌舞伎町) and just went to see what was out there. The signs were flickering on one by one, red and yellow and electric blue, and the smell of yakitori smoke drifted out of the alleys. The only people who really looked at me were the ones trying to sell me something. Everyone else just flowed past and vanished into the crowd, and so did I. There is a strange comfort in that, in being a small quiet thing moving slowly through a loud, bright place. You get to just look. I didn't talk to anyone. I didn't take many photos.
