Following the failed Kenmu Restoration, Japan entered a new feudal era under the Ashikaga shogunate, also known as the Muromachi period (1336–1573). In this video, we explore how the country transitioned from centralized military rule to a century of chaos, war, and unbridled ambition: the famous Sengoku Jidai, or "Warring States Period." From their base in Kyoto, the Ashikaga imposed unstable control over regional clans. During Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's reign, trade with China, the art of Noh, the tea ceremony, and Zen flourished, but the shogun's real power eroded. Beginning in the mid-15th century, with the devastating Onin War (1467–1477), Japan fragmented into dozens of fiefdoms controlled by warlords, or daimyō. Thus began the Sengoku Jidai, a period of constant clan strife, betrayals, shifting alliances, and expanding castles.
