Instead of waiting out the uncertainty, Dream Theater decided to channel their energy into the creative process without the pressure of a looming deadline. Bassist John Myung has specifically explained that the intense, adventurous nature of the lyrics and music is inspired by the extreme discipline and high-risk challenges associated with mountain climbing. The song's sprawling, virtuosic 20-minute runtime reflects this journey—starting with cinematic, futuristic builds and moving through intense, unpredictable musical peaks and valleys.
