From Gold to a Work of Art: Creating a Designer Ring with Dark Tourmalines and Natural Diamonds

A truly exceptional jewel does not begin with a finished design. It begins with an idea, a natural gemstone, and hundreds of precise decisions that determine whether the final piece will simply look beautiful—or become something deeply personal, unmistakable, and impossible to reproduce. In this video, we reveal the full creation of a one-of-a-kind designer ring crafted in 14K yellow and white gold, featuring two natural dark tourmalines—one oval-cut and one pear-cut—surrounded by natural white and black diamonds. This is not mass production, and it is not an assembly of ready-made components. Every setting and structural element was created specifically for these gemstones in our independent luxury jewelry atelier in Toronto. The process begins with gold. The yellow and white gold are annealed, rolled, and prepared into strips of the exact thickness and width required for the future construction. From these strips, two individual settings are formed by hand: one for the oval tourmaline and one for the pear-shaped stone. Every natural gemstone has its own proportions and character. Our task is not to force the stone into a predetermined design, but to build the design around the gemstone itself. The oval setting is gradually shaped, aligned, and refined until it follows the stone precisely. The pear-cut tourmaline requires an entirely different construction, especially around its elongated silhouette and pointed tip. Each setting is repeatedly checked against its stone and adjusted until the fit, support, and proportions are correct. The two settings and the ring shank are then positioned with precision and soldered together. At this stage, separate elements become a unified structure, and the artistic composition begins to take physical form. After assembly, the ring is refined and polished before gemstone setting begins. Every diamond seat is prepared individually. A halo of natural white diamonds is created around the oval tourmaline, while natural black diamonds frame the pear-cut stone. Additional white diamonds continue along the shank, creating rhythm and continuity through the design. A separate seat is prepared for the accent white diamond above the pointed tip. The spacing, alignment, and security of every stone are critical. The natural white and black diamonds are set under a microscope, allowing exceptional control and precision throughout the entire setting process. Before the central tourmalines are installed, the ring undergoes meticulous intermediate polishing. This stage is essential because some areas become difficult to reach once the larger gemstones are secured. In high-level jewelry craftsmanship, quality extends beyond the surfaces that are immediately visible. Every hidden area must be finished to the same uncompromising standard. Only then are the center stones set: first the oval-cut dark tourmaline, followed by the pear-cut dark tourmaline. Finally, the accent natural white diamond is secured above the pointed tip, introducing the final point of light and completing the composition. Once all gemstones are set, the ring is polished again, cleaned, and prepared for presentation. The result is a unified work of jewelry art: two natural dark tourmalines, natural white and black diamonds, contrasting 14K yellow and white gold, and a design created around the character of the stones.
