When Peugeot's product planners first started working on the 207's successor, the question was whether the 207 SW should also have a successor. A new phenomenon was on the horizon: the SUV/Crossover. Peugeot chose a compact crossover over an SW variant of the future 208 when working on the 207 replacement. While crossovers and SUVs existed at the time, they weren't in the 207's segment. This so-called B-segment therefore opened up a world of SUV and crossover concepts. Nevertheless, Peugeot wasn't the first when it introduced the 2008. Among others, Nissan with the Juke and Renault with the Captur outpaced Peugeot. But because the French were among the first, the field still had to be explored.
