Video Center / Comprehensive Report China's "Law on Promoting National Unity and Progress" officially came into effect on July 1st. Not only Chinese citizens, but also citizens worldwide are brought under its jurisdiction. Anyone deemed by China to have "undermined national unity" could face cross-border prosecution. Premier Cho Jung-tai criticized the law, stating that its "ultimate goal is to annex Taiwan and eliminate the Republic of China." Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Liang Wen-chieh also warned that the law's wording is vague, and even advocating for "maintaining the status quo" could make Taiwanese people "politically wanted criminals in China." Following the new law's implementation, a wave of "Taiwanese self-surrender" has swept Taiwanese social media. Many netizens posted photos with captions like "Taiwan independence," jokingly referring to themselves as "internationally wanted criminals," and even taunting Xi Jinping, "Come and arrest me!" DPP legislators Wang Shih-chien and Wang Ting-yu criticized China's actions as "aggression" and a "rogue bill." KMT legislator Lai Shih-pao emphasized that the Republic of China's sovereignty resides in Taiwan, but also pointed the finger at the Mainland Affairs Council, questioning whether it was "basically just arguing with the mainland."
