This video is about the one mistake you might be making that dooms the release of you web series. Recently, I’ve been talking to A LOT of series web producers who ask me how I build audiences and make a living from creating web series and online video content. I always start by asking them where they are now in the process and most say, “Well, I have already produced X number of episodes and I’m going into production on the next one soon.” Then I ask them, how much have you spent so far”?... And that’s when my jaw drops, some say $3,000 some $10k and I talked to a guy yesterday that told me he spent $100,000 on 8 episodes. I ask how they plan to get their money back or even better make a profit and that’s when they get quiet. Basically, it’s a plan of “make it and they will come”. “I’ll throw up on the web and people will see it and share it and before you know it, I’ll be getting my digital Emmy”. I’ve done this myself and I have a ton of friends who have too so there is no shame in it. That’s what the industry tells us to do. Well, it’s just wrong. I’m sorry, but it is. If the plan is to chuck it up on the web and hope, it’s doomed from the start. The 1 or 2 series we can point that were lightning in a bottle are VERY atypical and the chances are extremely low of that happening to 99.99999% of web series that are independently released. But what if you had a ready-made audience that was itching for your content before you ever shot frame one. What if you had discovered where they all hung out online and could ‘own’ that audience for yourself and all but insure your web series was met with open arms by an audience big enough to get you paid. In this video, I show you how to pre-build an audience without an advertising budget, without a distributor and without having to move to LA to make your name.
