There are many, many different varieties of beans. Around 8,000 are safely stored in a cold storage chamber. Essentially inaccessible to gardeners. But thanks to a community project, gardeners can bring a small piece of this diversity into their own gardens. Dr. Kerstin Neumann from the Leibniz Institute of Crop Plant Research and Plant Genetics in Gatersleben explains how this works, why garden beans should grow in every garden, and how they thrive best.
