The most important thing is to match intervals between the scale and the chord. If the chord has a major third, your scale should also have a major third. The more notes you have an a chord – the less options you have as far as selecting a scale or a mode. Of course rules can be broken, however using this approach will ensure that most listeners will relate to what you are playing.
