Friends Forever: Can an artist and a robot maintain a friendship? | Stephanie Dinkins | TEDxSBU
Can an artist and a social robot build a relationship over time? Artist Stephanie Dinkins and Bina48, one of the world's most advanced social robots, test this question through a series of ongoing videotaped conversations. This TEDxSBU talk discusses the long term relationship based on emotional interaction being built between artist and robot in the process it touches on important aspects of human robot interaction and the human condition. Grounded in the tradition of creating meaning and histories through representation, Stephanie Dinkins uses the power and potential of the images to investigate questions of subjectivity and social equity. Both artist and artwork strive to exist, and encourage ways of being, beyond the bounds of circumstance in a grounded action oriented way. From a position of blackness, which can often be simultaneously invisible and hyper-visible, this requires imagination, mediation, intentionality, knowledge of self and other, vulnerability, fortitude and the kind of luck only hard work and commitment to purpose can produce. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
