KAREL APPEL –Object Paintings at Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin, 2021
KAREL APPEL Object Paintings Goethestraße 2/3, 10623 Berlin February – April 2021 With commentary by Prof. Dr. Franz Wilhelm Kaiser Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of sculptures by Karel Appel at Goethestraße 2/3, in Berlin. In important literature on the artist, Karel Appel (1921–2006), who would have celebrated his centennial this year, is consistently referred to as a painter and founding member of CoBrA. The fact that the avant-garde group lasted only three years, and that this period thus actually grasps a relatively brief episode at the beginning of Appel's long career, is usually overlooked. Likewise, few are aware that Appel expressed himself not only in a painterly manner, but also in three dimensions. It is true that he was first and foremost a painter, and his forays into objecthood are mostly based on a painterly rather than sculptural approach, but this is precisely where their particular appeal lies: they apply painterly thinking onto the object, and for this reason Appel's sculptures are known as 'Object Paintings'. 0:00 "Singing Donkeys", 1992 0:42 "Spider", 1991 (cast 1993) 1:04 "Mouse on a Table", 1971; "Head on a Chair", 1971; "Man with Flower", 1971; "Flying Fish", 1971; "Caterpillar", 1971 1:32 "Study for `Monument for the Indian Chief´", 1990 1:55 "Monument for the Indian Chief Seattle", 1990 2:09 "Blue Bird", 1991 2:23 "Sitting Bird", 1991 (cast 1993) 2:44 "Pandora's Box", 1992 3:23 "Frog with Umbrella", 1993 3:39 "Beggar", 1987 3:57 "Cat Standing on a Head", 1991 (cast 1993) 4:17 "Looking through the Open Window", 1991 4:34 "Donkey", 1991 (cast 1993) 5:00 "Coming down from the Mountains", 1993 (cast 1997) 5:22 "Cry no.1", 1960 5:40 "Head", 1975 5:53 "Bird's Head", 1947 (cast 1963-1964); "Elephant Head", 1948 (cast date unknow); "Woman's Torso", 1947 (cast date unknown); "Bird-Woman", 1947 (cast date unknown); "Cobra Bird", 1950 (cast date unknown); "Elephant", 1950 (cast 1989) 6:30 "Head", 1954 (cast date unknown); "Head", 1954; "Head", 1954; "Head", 1954 6:53 "De onweerstaanbare verscheidenheid van het dier", 2003 7:22 "The Second Yawner", 1992 7:49 "Yawner", 1992 8:13 "Cavalry Bird", 1950 (cast 1989) Learn more about the exhibition on our website: https://www.maxhetzler.com/exhibition...
