When people insult, the reaction depends on who does it, why and how often. But there are several approaches: Do not take every word as the truth. An insult often says more about the state or intentions of the other person than about you. Clarifying or setting a boundary. Calm: “I hate to hear that,” “Don’t talk to me like that” — sometimes works better than a fight. Don’t instantly respond with emotion for emotion. Because then a fight often begins, not a conversation. Look at the context. One-time rudeness and systematic humiliation are different things. Choose distance if a person constantly hurts. Not all relationships need to be saved.
