6 key changes in the *new* 2022-24 gymnastics Code of Points (CoP)
I haven’t done an update video in a while, but this one seems important! The FIG recently released a copy of the 2022-24 Code of Points (CoP) for women’s artistic gymnastics. This very long document outlines every skill, how execution scores can be calculated, guides on finding difficulty scores, and lists of deductions. If someone really wanted to learn how to judge gymnastics from the ground up, and only had one resource, the Code would be a way to learn everything about the sport. Essentially, every four years, our sport changes, and it’s making some significant changes now! Enjoy a video summarizing a few of the major changes, although there were many smaller changes that are not mentioned. There are a few notable changes that I did not include, some of which include: Tkatchev skills are restricted to one per circle type, meaning that gymnasts can’t include multiple similar Tkatchevs in one routine. Bar workers who had strong flight skills and used the Tkatchev multiple times to increase their D value will have to find other release skills. D + E connection on uneven bars is downgraded to 0.1 CV (was 0.2). Flight connections that are valued at either E + E or F + D will earn 0.2 bonus. On beam, Ring Leap (D) and Ring Jump (D) are considered as the same element, and a gymnast can only perform one of them for base value in their routine. This will hurt gymnasts who are strong on rings, especially many competitors from China, who are fond of using both the Ring Leap and Ring Jump to improve their D score. Dismounts on beam are no longer eligible for connection bonus. Artistry deductions have been rewritten; some are more detailed while some still seem vague. Gymnasts who do not turn during a Tsukahara vault and perform it like a handspring vault will receive a 0.3 deduction from the E panel. I guess the Candle Mount (now a C, downgraded from D!) isn’t really a “unique” skill given how common it’s become over the past quad, seeing that we’ve probably had one at nearly every competition and beam final in the world, but it seemed like it fit best there. If you enjoyed this video or learned something, I would really appreciate it if you liked and subscribed! I'm also always interested in hearing what people want to see -- more CoP videos? Scoring? Skill analysis? Something entirely different? If you have a suggestion, please feel free to comment. I appreciate all of you very much :). Thank you so much for watching! Timestamps: 0:00 1.
