Illegal mining and trafficking of gold in the Black Volta have become major issues in Ghana, posing a serious threat to the country's environment, aquatic life, the ecosystem, and depriving Ghana of its economic benefits. The Bui Dam, a vital hydroelectric project, is also at risk.
