Unterwegs am Marienberg - mit Schloss Marienburg, Hügelgräbern, Waldgaststätte und Sachsenwall

Hike on the Marienberg near Nordstemmen. Therefore, the tour starts at the Marienburg Castle parking lot. The Saxon Wall is located directly next to the parking lot. The early medieval ramparts enclose what is now the park surrounding Marienburg Castle. The castle itself was built directly into the 6-hectare fortified refuge. From the parking area, head northwest to the former Marienberg Forest Inn. This popular destination, which burned down completely in 1976, was once a favorite spot for day trips from the surrounding villages and towns. The Marienberg Forest Inn boasted a multi-story building with guest rooms, a bandstand and dance floor, and a beer garden. It even featured a small amusement park with a carousel, playground, and aviaries. Today, only the remaining foundations, the large freshwater tank, and the septic tank serve as reminders of the former inn. Continuing on, the path leads past the Ernst August Oak, planted in 1866 and marked by a memorial stone, to the Bronze Age burial mounds on the northern edge of the hill. The burial ground originally comprised nine graves, of which three remain today. The hiking trail, which leads southwest around Adenser Berg, passes directly over two of the graves. Finally, the trail ascends again towards the former forest inn, as Ordenberg Castle, another refuge castle, once stood right next to it, and its ramparts are still visible. Part of the ramparts was repurposed as a freshwater reservoir for Marienburg Castle.
