Exploring the Captain Cook Pub, St Hildas. Middlesbrough. The Old Town's last surviving public house
In this video I take a look around the recently renovated Captain Cook Pub located 'over the border' in St Hildas, Middlesbrough. The Jacobean style building, designed by Middlesbrough's Robert Moore was erected in1893 and is a Grade II listed building. It was added to the Victorian Society's Top Ten Endangered Buildings list in 2020. During works that were taking place on a neighbouring development, it was noted that essential works were required to preserve the building. Funding was sourced and the work commenced in 2021. Works included (but were not limited to): a. replacement of the roof covering in its entirety with new slate type covering, renewed roof timbers, rafters etc. as required; b. all rainwater goods replaced; c. all structural issues to gables demolished and rebuilt; d. the main exposed gables skinned to make safe and water tight; e. removal of all plaster ceilings to allow access to damaged roof and floor timbers; f. removal of plaster from external walls to allow repointing / brick repairs where necessary; g. removal of all damaged internal walls, fixtures and fittings suspended ceilings etc. removal of all finishes to leave a bare / stripped building and; h. demolition of single storey extensions added as toilets etc. as these were structurally unsafe and apertures blocked up as required. By carrying out the above works, Middlesbrough Council has succesfully preserved a Grade II listed building and turned it into an apppealing prospect for a potential future user. Thanks: Claire and Jack from Middlesbrough Council James Stubbs Rob Atkin The random guy who wandered on site whilst I was filiming and told me some really interesting tales (but didn't want to be included in the film). Some of which, I decided NOT to include in the final cut! Photo credits detailed in the outro. All footage captured by Middlesbrough Mike, March 2025.
