Child Ballad #076 - The Lass of Ocram (Aughrim)

I've just finished reading the The Dubliners, a collection of James Joyce stories. The Lass of Aughrim features in the very strange story called 'The Dead'. The story ends with a husband hoping for some sexy time with his wife after a Christmas dinner, but she is upset over hearing the song during the evening which had been sung by lover from her youth who died when he was seventeen. Only a few verses ended up in the version referenced in the book, form a much longer ballad, The Lass of Ocram (possibly a mishearing of Aughrim as I can't find any placed called Ocram), which was published in 1740: http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/th... Ewan MacGregor sings the song while playing Joyce in the film 'Nora':    • Lass of Aughrim Ewan McGregor   And played here on Joyce's own guitar:    • The Lass of Aughrim   The story in the ballad isn't clear, which suggests the broadside is a mash-up. In some versions it is Lord Gregory's evil mother who posses the questions to the lass and turns her away.
